Recent Auto Accident cases with Serious Injuries or Deaths in South Florida

A fatal two car crash at the intersection of Dixie Highway and Commercial Blvd., in Oakland Park, Florida on June 27, 2019. One person died in a violent two-car collision in Oakland Park, Florida the Broward Sheriff’s Office said. The crash happened just after 12 a.m. Thursday in the southbound lanes of North Dixie Highway at East Commercial Boulevard, investigators said. The collision left various car and engine parts scattered on the roadway. Crews worked through the night to remove the debris as evidence was being gathered by Broward Sheriff’s.  By 6 a.m., the cars involved were placed on flat bed tow trucks and removed from the scene. Investigators were working to reach relatives before releasing the name of the crash victim.  The investigation is ongoing.

On June 6, 2019 in Ft. Lauderdale a fatal accident occurred on I-95 when a driver was killed by a tire that flew off a box truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. FHP officials say the tire came off the box truck, bounced over a dividing wall on I-95 near Commercial Boulevard and crashed onto the roof of his sports utility vehicle, killing the 25-year-old driver. Lt. Alvaro A. Feola said the truck was heading south when it “lost its left front tire.” The SUV was in the northbound lanes. Feola says Joseu Alfonso Cala of Tuxedo Park, New York, died at the scene. His 24-year-old passenger Julianna Maria Charles of Winter Garden, Florida, was taken to the hospital. Her injuries were not considered life threatening. The crash remains under investigation.

A mother and father are devastated after their two young daughters were killed following a violent crash on I-95 on April 29, 2019. The two-car crash happened Sunday in Deerfield Beach and shut down the southbound lanes of I-95 just north of Sample Road. Investigators said there were no child restraint car seats in the Toyota Corolla the children were in. They also don’t know if the children had seat belts on. The toddler has been identified as Akeena Avanel Bennett and her five-year-old sister as Keanna Ariel Bennett.The children’s mother Annette Bennet said it was the children’s godmother, Rashida Raby, who was driving the girls to a church service in Fort Lauderdale when the crash happened. Bennett and her husband were out of town when they learned of the crash and flew back to South Florida immediately. In a tearful video she posted on her Facebook page Bennett said “Both of my kids, both of my kids are gone, my two babies are gone.”  Both Raby, 34, and the driver of the other car, 26-year-old Zachary Schot from Virginia, were transported to the hospital.  Raby was released from Broward Health Medical Center.
